“The things that fill our homes say a great deal about who we are...”—Amy Azzarito, The Elements of a Home

Yet again, we find ourselves sharing a book that is not about miniatures. But it is about the things that go into a home. And for us, the two are nearly inseparable.

Interior design, obscure history and everything home decor meet up in The Elements of a Home—a curious collection of home element histories.

Confession time—I love some good obscure facts. So, Robb has definitely been getting an earful of home-related trivia. I was initially drawn to reading up on my favorite aspects of a home—wallpaper, parquet and (obviously) dollhouses. And you’ll get the stories behind those home fixtures that we take for granted, like bathtubs, sofas and candles.

But every chapter is filled with real surprises. You’ll find out why the White House includes jib doors (I didn’t know what a jib door was). Or that in the islands off the coast of Japan, tassels were once used as calculators. And, that Tom Cruise apparently sleeps on a mattress made with an unexpected type of filling. Um, yeah.

With the holidays quickly approaching, it’s kind of the perfect gift book. But beyond that, it makes a great addition to the stack on your coffee table. Let us know what your favorite home element discover is!
